Here are 6 digital paintings I did for Open Studio, in the order which I completed them.
This one was based off of a photograph, so all the trees and rocks are in the same location as they were in the picture. After I finished the landscape, I thought it needed more so I added a mech/machine walking through the scene. It was inspired by the art of Jakub Rozalski
This was also based off a photograph, but much more loosely. Mostly, the photograph was just used to place edges of the hills and get the ratio of sky to ground correct. I began this one with the mech sketched out, as well as the people, so unlike the last one this one was designed around them being more prominent. Ironically, I feel like it fits in less than the on where I just kind of threw it in there at the end.
I did this one when I couldn't think of anything. I pretty much started playing around with tree brushes, and then accidentally made the sky kind of red. I went with it, and then drew out these strange, tall mechs walking through. I then added the searchlights, a second one, and the red smoke towards the end.
This was a new direction for me: I found the mech design online, as well as a wooded forest. I put the mech in and the forest, and then found lots of pictures of machines. I found out how to lock things within a layer, so I was able to add various machine parts into the outline of the mech. Then I was able to play with the shading and some other things to get this mechanical look with very little actual painting involved. Then I took the layout of the trees, painted over them, and put the original photograph very faint in the background, and painted over it to be a snowy scene.
This is based off of someone else's fan art of the video game Bloodborne, which was based off of a very prominent scene in the game where the camera makes this exact frame. I don't do characters/people much, so it was really helpful to have the concept art showing where/how the character should look.
This is another art based off of fan art of Bloodborne, which was based off of concept art of the city in the game called Yharnam. I did this with dozens of layers going from back to front which allowed me to get the sprawling city look. I especially like the atmosphere of this, and atmosphere is something the game does amazingly well too. In this and the previous one, it is the moon in the sky - not the sun. Part of the theme of the game revolves around the rising of the "Blood Moon" and so both of these are afforded an interesting color palette because of this. It is night time, yet the moon is bright with the sky being a brown/yellow/red mix.
